Zynga, best known for its FarmVille and CSR Racing series, has announced plans to release its first blockchain and NFT-based games this year.
Matt Wolf, Zynga’s VP of blockchain gaming, said “We have to be really careful and actively listen and deeply understand who the cohort is that are consuming these blockchain games right now, who are collecting these NFTs.”

Basically, Zynga plans to expand its current blockchain gaming team from 15 to up to 100 employees by the end of this year. Just recently, Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) announced plans to acquire Zynga for $12.7 billion, but the deal is yet to close.
Talking about the company’s NFT-based gaming plans, Wolf stated that the upcoming blockchain-based games will be brand new titles. According to him, it “doesn’t make sense” to start adding NFTs into existing games like FarmVille right away.
Besides, Zynga has entered the sometimes-contentious blockchain-based gaming sector more aggressively than many other traditional gaming companies. Given that, hesitation has been a common denominator among gaming studios, as cryptocurrency-related features have frequently elicited a backlash.
Some players believe that companies are simply looking for new ways to extract money from their customers.
Unequivocally, Wolf has stated that the company’s game developers will always have the option to opt-in or out of any NFT plans. Despite the criticisms, Wolf sees NFTs and blockchain technology as the logical next step in Zynga’s evolution. The game will provide tokenized systems enabling new and more realistic forms of value, ownership and wealth creation for gamers.
