Yu Suzuki, the brains behind popular Sega title Virtua Fighter, is set to launch the game’s characters as NFTs, much to the delight of its fans. In a recent announcement, Sukuzi notes he will be teaming up with OASYX, an NFT protocol, to create 1,000 Virtua Fighter digital collectibles that will be based on 11 Virtua Fighter characters from the game’s first three titles.
According to OASYX, these non-fungible tokens will serve as the base for the game’s future Metaverse avatars. At the helm will be Suzuki, who was responsible for developing the popular fighting game of the 1990s.
Despite having left his role as director of Sega in 2009, Suzuki has maintained a close working relationship with the company he gave most of his time and creative genius to. So, following growing insistence from fans that Sega launches NFTs for some of its popular titles, it only seemed right to let the former director take the lead.

Sega Will Own the Virtua Fighter NFT IP
Sega will own the IP for the new digital creations, as is the case with the game, however, Suzuki will be allowed to shape the NFT project as best as he sees fit. The collaboration will bring back fond memories for the game he developed back in 1993 using “innovative 3D computer graphics technology, which was cutting-edge and industry-leading at the time.”
Over the years, the game has grown to be loved and supported by many. Now these NFTs aim to strengthen that bond between fans and the game by creating unique and exciting experiences.
It’s a challenge Suzuki is up to. In a statement, he notes, “Through my work supervising the development of OASYX’s unique worldview, I am delighted to combine innovative technology in the form of blockchain-based NFTs, with three titles from the Virtua Fighter series to create new entertainment for a wide range of gaming fans.”
