In this episode, we interviewed Gloria Chan, the Principal of MKMCF Ma Chan Duen Hey Memorial College (MCDH). We discussed MCDH’s vision to revolutionize education by nurturing young creators to make their first leap into The Sandbox, making them the first high school in Hong Kong to own a LAND.

What is Meta MCDH?
Founded in 1998, MCDH is a co-ed secondary school situated in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong. They believe that education should keep pace with the times, which is why the Metaverse Academy was established in 2022.
The school is committed to building a “future-ready” campus that provides practical metaverse education by cultivating the knowledge, skills, and values that students require to meet the challenges of life in the 21st century.
This year, the school introduced new courses that provide knowledge and skills relating to the metaverse, as well as helping students find career opportunities in the virtual world that will meet the rapidly developing needs of the future society.
Road to Mega City 3
MCDH is one of the partner schools that participated in the Mega City 3 campaign by owning LAND in The Sandbox. This school program began when students started asking “What is an NFT?” To cope with the growing curiosity about NFTs and digital assets, they introduced a systematic educational approach.
Gloria Chan first learned about The Sandbox when she walked past their pop-up store at K11 Musea in August 2022.
After learning more about the platform, they started their own metaverse education program involving different institutions, such as The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The program introduced students to blockchain technology, Web3, and other aspects of the metaverse. It also helped students learn how to use different tools and software to create NFTs and avatars, design their own games, and hold virtual exhibitions to display their work.
This initiative has generated support from both students and members of the teaching staff, and the school became an education partner in Mega City 3 this year. Their LAND in The Sandbox represents a permanent presence in the metaverse, allowing them to nurture students’ creativity and experiment with the endless possibilities it brings.
Building Meta MCDH
Meta MCDH encourages students to embrace their gaming interests and channel their strengths into creating their own games in the metaverse. The Metaverse Academy program is led by professional instructors and provides students with the opportunity to create their own virtual campus and embark on adventures such as battling monsters while cooking in a magical kitchen.
In addition to game-making, students can showcase their NFTs in a virtual art gallery. This project helps students keep up with new technological developments, boosts their creativity, and develops their interest into a potential career for the future.
The school believes that Web3 will be the future of Internet development. That’s why they introduced metaverse and programming into the Form 1 (7th Grade) computer science curriculum, also integrated NFT creation into visual art classes.
Moving forward, they plan to further digitize teaching by integrating other subjects, such as home economics and physical education, into the metaverse.
