Anichess, a gaming platform that seeks to modernize chess with web3 technology, has raised US$1.8M in a new funding round led by Sfermion and Amber Group, including participation from other investors such as Fenbushi Capital, Aspen Digital, and SNZ Capital.
The platform, a subsidiary of Animoca Brands, partners with Chess.com and five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen to bring new concepts to the traditional game.
Anichess plans to use the funding to grow its team to further enhance game development and increase marketing efforts.
What is Anichess?
Anichess offers a different take on chess by introducing spells and other non-traditional elements, encouraging players to explore novel strategies.
Since launching in 2023, Anichess platform has gained traction reaching over 1,000,000 registered users, with 150,000 playing daily.
Yat Siu, co-founder and Executive Chairman of Animoca Brands, also noted, “With its popularity, accessibility, and incredible strategic depth, chess is a classic game that has stood the test of time. One of the benefits of a game whose appeal is measured in centuries is the sophistication and passion of its community, and we are thrilled for Anichess to showcase our new and updated interpretation of the game of kings in partnership with Chess.com.”
The platform continues to develop new content and engage with its growing user base, and plans to launch a player-versus-player (PvP) mode in the second quarter of 2024 to expand its offerings.
Anichess can be accessed for free online, and more information is available on its website and social media platforms.
