Spellfire: Fans Are Bringing The Collectible Card Game To The Blockchain

Spellfire, an out-of-print collectible card game (CCG), is being reborn as an NFT game. The fantasy-themed card game first appeared in 1994. Unfortunately, it didn’t last very long, surviving just over three years after its launch before going out of business. With this, the Spellfire community and its legions of fans didn’t have any choice but to bid goodbye to the game.

TSR, Inc. created the CCG game based on their popular RPG game, Dungeons & Dragons. However, in 2006, they canceled their trademark, allowing anyone to adopt and use the name. This is where the proponents of Spellfire come into the picture.

According to the announcement, the team purchased the game’s long-dormant domain name, re-established its trademark, and started building an all-new version of it. In addition, they wanted to keep up with the gaming trends, so they made a digital version of the game, complete with NFT cards that players could own and profit from.

What Can Spellfire Offer in terms of Gameplay?

In general, the team wanted to create a new game with its own unique mechanics and lore while paying homage to the original. The game is equipped with its own app to unite unique real-world cards, augmented reality cards, and NFT-based ownership into a single game experience. By introducing the NFT cards, the game is providing an opportunity for players to own the assets and earn money.

The game’s cards come in three varieties. First, we have the original NFT cards. Like all of the game’s cards, they feature custom artwork and in-depth descriptions. Owning these cards will unlock exclusive perks and benefits. For example, holders will receive a high-quality holographic reprint of their card. That makes the original NFT cards the first NFTs that owners can touch in the real world. But that’s not all.

Meanwhile, there are also 1000 NFT copies of each original NFT that other players can buy. They’re called playing NFT cards and the owner of the original receives 90% of the proceeds from their sales.

Lastly, we have the non-NFT cards, which are standard-issue printed collectible cards. These cards are QR Code-based, meaning owners can just scan them on the app to claim ownership. Then, they can use the game’s play-to-earn mechanic to upgrade the power of their copy of the card. The QR Code on each card makes it easy for users to sell their upgraded cards to other users for a profit.

Progress and Upcoming Launch

The team shared that they had already completed designing hundreds of new cards to power the game. The first set contains 115 unique designs that players can purchase in the form of NFTs. On their own, they have enough power and variety to build a complete and competitive card deck.

In fact, these cards are already listed on OpenSea. So, users can already start building their decks ahead of the full game’s launch.
